Background of the Study
In recent years, the rise of digital platforms and social media has given ordinary citizens the tools to participate in the production and dissemination of news, a phenomenon known as citizen journalism. This form of journalism, which operates outside traditional media institutions, has proven to be a valuable resource for local communities, particularly in regions where mainstream media may be limited or biased. In Bida Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, citizen journalism has emerged as a key player in promoting transparency and holding public officials accountable. The use of mobile phones, social media, and blogs has allowed residents to share information, document issues, and expose corruption or inefficiency in local governance. Research has shown that citizen journalism can foster greater civic engagement, enhance public scrutiny of government actions, and contribute to the strengthening of democratic processes (Sani & Ahmed, 2023). However, challenges such as misinformation, lack of training, and potential legal consequences often hinder its effectiveness. This study aims to explore the impact of citizen journalism on accountability in Bida LGA, focusing on its potential to enhance government transparency and encourage active citizenship.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Although citizen journalism has gained prominence in Bida LGA, its influence on accountability and governance remains understudied. The lack of formal training for citizen journalists, coupled with the challenges of verifying information, raises concerns about the reliability of the content they produce. Additionally, local authorities may view citizen journalists with suspicion, particularly when they expose corruption or governmental inefficiencies. This tension can lead to suppression, harassment, or even legal action against citizen journalists. Furthermore, the impact of citizen journalism on improving public accountability in Bida LGA is unclear, as there is limited research on how effectively it holds local government officials accountable for their actions. This study seeks to fill this gap by investigating the role of citizen journalism in promoting government accountability in Bida LGA and identifying strategies to enhance its effectiveness.

The findings will be valuable for media practitioners, policymakers, and civil society organizations seeking to harness the power of citizen journalism to improve governance. Moreover, the study’s recommendations will help to address the challenges faced by citizen journalists, ultimately fostering an environment where they can more effectively contribute to government accountability.
